H16 Aussie Forestay

The Aussie forestay replaced the original upper and lower forestay system in 2009 on the Hobie 16 as the factory standard. It is modeled after what the dominant Aussie racers using on their boats. Aussie forestays are longer than the classic halyard forestays actually have a separate connection cable for the jib halyard. The separate attachment point for the jib halyard provides a back up if either were to fail. If either the forestay or jib halyard were to break, the other will hold the mast up.

The Aussie forestay is available in 3 versions:

1) Pre 2009 Aussie Forestay, this version is 18′ 2.75″ long and is made with 1/8″ 1 x 19 black coated wire. This version requires a separate Aussie halyard pigtail, Part number, 002-0235-00 for the halyard blocks to attach to.

2)Pre 2009 Aussie Forestay W/Pig is also 18′ 2.75″ long with a 6″ pigtail and is made with 1/8″ 1×19 black coated 316 stainless wire rope. This forestay runs from the bridles to the mast tang and has a pig tail coming off of the upper thimble for the jib halyard blocks. This has been the standard Murrays option for a long time due to the simplicity of attachment. With the single upper thimble, it’s easier to fit your cables on the mast tang.

3) The 2009+ version is 18′ 9.75″ long, made from 7×19 bare wire. The bare wire makes it easier for the Jib Hank to slide up the cable. This is the current standard for H16 rigging and H16 racing. The 7×19 wire is more flexible and the additional length allows for even more mast rake. The 2009+ version has a copper wire stop about 10″ up from the bottom of the forestay to facilitate a shock cord segment be installed between the stop and the forestay adjuster or thimble to take up the slack in the forestay automatically once the jib halyard has been tensioned.

Rigging dimensions changed in 2009, if you have a modern racing boat from about 2000 and up, you likely want the 2009+ version. This would match any of the newer sails and current fleet racing characteristics.
